Wheat Allergy

Wheat allergy is a severe sudden onset allergic reaction to a certain protein component of wheat.

That is, it's an auto-immune response of the body. Usual symptoms are immediate coughing, asthma, breathing difficulties, and/or projectile vomiting. It can cause life-threatening responses in allergic people. Thank goodness this allergic reaction is quite rare.

The more common response is a difficulty in digesting the proteins in the wheat, called gluten.

Gluten intolerance can cause aching joints, gastro-intestinal problems, depression, eczema, low blood iron levels and more.

If you are allergic to wheat, you have a challenge. Most breads, pastas, and battered fried foods have gluten. It hides in cookies, donuts, bagels and most prepared foods. Eating at restaurants could pose a problem.
